Headlines
AMD launches new AI chips, challenging Nvidia’s dominance.
Why it Matters: AMD’s advancements in AI chips provide alternatives to Nvidia’s products, addressing the high demand and chip shortage in the AI industry. This competition could lead to innovations and improvements in AI technology.
Zoom In:
AMD unveiled the MI325X accelerator, available in Q4 2024.
The MI350 series, expected in 2025, promises better AI inference performance.
The MI400 series planned for 2026 continues AMD's accelerated release strategy.
AMD projects over $4 billion in AI chip sales for data centres this year.
Nvidia holds over 80% market share in AI chips.
Big Picture: AMD’s strategic release of new AI chips is set to disrupt Nvidia's dominance in the market. With the MI325X, MI350, and MI400 series, AMD aims to meet the growing computational demands of AI data centres. This competition will likely drive further advancements in AI technology, benefiting the entire industry by providing more options and potentially lowering costs.
Intel CEO Counters Nvidia on AI Chips
Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger defends Moore's Law and introduces new AI chips, aiming to reclaim market share from Nvidia. Gelsinger emphasises Intel’s role in the future of AI at Computex.
Why it Matters: Intel’s strategic advancements in AI chips and defence of Moore’s Law aim to challenge Nvidia’s market dominance and reinvigorate Intel’s position in the semiconductor industry.
Zoom In:
Intel's new Xeon 6 data centre processors boast more efficient cores.
Gelsinger claims Intel’s Gaudi 3 clusters outperform Nvidia’s H100 in AI tasks.
New Gaudi systems priced at $65,000 and $125,000 aim to be more affordable alternatives.
Intel’s Gaudi 3 clusters: 8,192 accelerators.
Claimed 40% faster AI training time than Nvidia H100 GPUs.
Estimated Intel revenue will drop by $20 billion from 2021 to 2024.
Big Picture: Intel, historically a leader in the computer industry, is investing heavily to regain its edge in chip design and manufacturing. The company faces fierce competition from Nvidia and AMD, especially in AI computing. Gelsinger’s emphasis on Moore’s Law and Intel’s new products aim to position the company as a critical player in the burgeoning AI market, expected to drive the semiconductor industry to $1 trillion by the decade’s end.
